Our Approach

From Data to Long-Term, Pesticide-Free Mosquito Control
ZikaSeal™ works in partnership with cities to deliver a long-term, pesticide-free mosquito control solution. Our approach combines data analysis, local adaptation, physical infrastructure, and ongoing optimisation to ensure effective protection 365 days a year.

1. Data-Driven City Analysis

We begin with a comprehensive analysis of the city using our satellite-based hotspot modelling framework, combined with environmental, climatic, and urban infrastructure data.

This analysis enables us to:

  • Identify high-risk mosquito breeding areas
  • Prioritise storm drains with the greatest impact on mosquito populations
  • Focus interventions where they deliver the highest public health benefit

The outcome is a targeted and evidence-based foundation for implementation.

2. Local Adaptation & Stakeholder Alignment

Before deployment, we work closely with the municipality to ensure alignment across all relevant departments.

We hold coordination meetings with key stakeholders, including:

  • Public health authorities
  • Parks and environmental departments
  • Roads and infrastructure departments

Together, we agree on what a ZikaSeal™ implementation entails:

  • A transition away from biweekly chemical treatments
  • A shift towards inspection-based control
  • Clear roles, responsibilities, and operational procedures

Each deployment is custom-adapted to the specific requirements of the city’s drainage network and existing maintenance practices.

3. Custom Design, Delivery & Local Installation

Based on the analysis and local adaptation, ZikaSeal™ units are custom-designed to fit the city’s storm drain types and operational conditions.

This includes compatibility with:

  • Local storm drain geometries
  • Routine cleaning practices
  • Standard cleaning methods such as vacuum trucks and mechanical equipment

The system is manufactured and delivered from Denmark and installed by the municipality’s own operational staff or local contractors.

Installation is fast, requires no specialised tools, and remains fully compatible with normal storm drain cleaning operations.

4. Subscription-Based Operation & Maintenance

ZikaSeal™ is designed for long-term operation in demanding urban environments.

  • The stainless steel mounting unit is robust and designed to remain in place for many years
  • The replaceable ZikaSeal™ barrier may, over time, be affected by debris or substances such as paint, lime, asphalt, or other materials entering the drainage system

If replacement is required:

  • It can be carried out locally in approximately 5 minutes
  • No specialised training is needed
  • Replacement components are included in the subscription model

This ensures predictable costs and worry-free operation for municipalities.

5. Inspection, Reporting & System Overview

ZikaSeal™ includes a digital inspection and reporting tool that supports day-to-day operations.

The system provides:

  • Simple local reporting of inspections and maintenance
  • A clear overview of all ZikaSeal™ installations within the municipality

At the same time, system status can be monitored centrally by ZikaSeal from Copenhagen, enabling quality assurance, support, and long-term optimisation.

6. Continuous Optimisation & Annual Re-Modelling

Urban environments and mosquito dynamics evolve over time.

To ensure continued effectiveness:

  • The city is re-modelled annually using updated satellite and environmental data
  • Existing deployments are reviewed
  • Adjustments can be made if risk patterns or local conditions change

This ensures that the solution remains effective and future-proof.
