Efficacy: tested by EID Méditerranée

ZikaSeal blocks 99% of mosquito traffic to and from the catch basin.

Independently tested by EID Méditerranée, Montpellier, report June 2026. The full report is available on Our solution.

The report states two limitations of the study: it did not assess whether the device stays watertight over time, and it did not assess whether the device affects the drain’s absorption capacity under heavy rain.

The test was carried out on Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito. What this means for Culex pipiens is set out in Two species, one barrier.

Risk model: ESA Kick-Start project

ZikaSeal ApS carried out a Kick-Start project with the European Space Agency. It ran from March to August 2026, closed with its final review on 18 August 2026, and is completed. The project built a satellite-based service that maps where tiger mosquitoes are likely to breed, drain by drain, using Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data, climate data and trap data, so municipalities can target physical barriers instead of treating every drain.

The two pilot cities, as ESA describes them:

  • Monaco, a Mediterranean city with no formalised control programme
  • Graz, Austria, a Central European city with an established chemical-control and entomological-surveillance programme

Result: the satellite-only model performed comparably to the earlier LiDAR-based version, reaching a proof-of-concept correlation of R² ≈ 0.55–0.65 with observed mosquito intensity (technology readiness level 5–6). It is in development, not a validated operational tool; the Montpellier map on Our approach is a demonstration, not an operational risk forecast.

Pilots and installations

  • Monaco — pilot city of the ESA Kick-Start project (March to August 2026, completed).
  • Graz, Austria — pilot city of the ESA Kick-Start project (March to August 2026, completed). ZikaSeal barriers have also been installed in Graz.
